FAQ
  • The model takes 2 types of inputs: the user-specific inputs on their investments, and asset risk and return forecasts. The user can choose their preferred source of these forecasts.
  • Based on the forecasts, the model simulates many future return paths for the assets, and then generates a path of holdings over the investment horizon with the goal to help the user assess the likelihood of meeting their investment goals.
  • No. Core Portfolio Design is not a licensed financial advisor or investment firm. Core Portfolio Design does not give personalized investment recommendations. • Yes! Read the model assumptions documentation to ensure you are comfortable with how currency is treated.
  • No. Core Portfolio Design can be used by anyone no matter their location. The model assumes no taxes, which is a reasonable assumption for tax-deferred accounts. These accounts are often used for long-horizon investing purposes, such as retirement or education.

  • Look into opening a direct investing account (low/no fee, no advisor) that is tax-deferred (ex. RRSP in Canada, where tax is not paid until money is withdrawn). If this is an appropriate option for you, it is likely the most cost/tax-efficient. Reducing fees and taxes can substantially improve wealth outcomes over time due to the compounding of returns.
  • Buy the assets in the proportions according to your chosen model. Or, look up ETFs (exchange traded funds) that approximate the asset classes modeled. We suggest looking for low-fee, low-complexity ETFs (i.e. market-capitalization weighted) from reputable, large organizations.
  • When you receive a reminder email, review your strategy and update if necessary.
  • Different rebalancing (buy or selling assets for your portfolio) triggers have different benefits. You are not obligated to rebalance at a specific periodicity, but we do recommend checking-in on your portfolio and your plan at a regular frequency.
  • Checking-in on your portfolio at a regular frequency allows you to:
    • Incorporate any changes in your goals or savings.
    • Update results with more recent risk and return forecasts.
    • Examine if your portfolio needs to be rebalanced to your target weights. For example, if you want a 60% allocation to equities, and a 40% allocation to bonds, but your current portfolio is at 50%.
    • Conversely, if your current portfolio is at 59% equities, then it’s probably not worth the transaction costs to rebalance back to 60%.
